Our Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Innovating for Environmental Excellence, Employee Well-being, and Sustainable Production

Our Sustainability Mission

At Bingham & Taylor, our sustainability mission is driven by a steadfast commitment to creating long-term, sustainable products and practices. Grounded in robust Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, we focus on innovating for the future—ensuring the delivery of clean drinking water and the safe transportation of natural gas. Our approach is holistic, considering the environmental impact, and the well-being of our employees, and the communities we serve, thereby fostering a sustainable and resilient infrastructure for generations to come.

Environmental Excellence

Air Emissions Reduction Achievements:

  • 93% Reduction in Particulate Matter (PM):  By transitioning to Electric Induction (EI) furnaces at the Culpeper facility, we’ve significantly reduced emissions of particulate matter, making our production processes cleaner and more efficient.
  • 100% Elimination of Harmful Emissions: The switch from older cupola-style coke-fired furnaces to EI furnaces has resulted in the complete elimination of nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from our metal melting process.
  • Energy Efficiency: The efficiency of the new EI furnaces has also led to a 52% decrease in the amount of energy required per ton of metal melted.

Waste Stream Reduction Achievements:

  • 63% Less Sand and Slag Waste: Recent plant upgrades have enabled us to generate significantly less sand and slag waste per ton of melted metal, significantly reducing our environmental footprint.
  • 93% Reduction in Particulate Filtrate: The switch to electric induction furnaces has also resulted in a considerable reduction in particulate filtrate generated per ton of melted metal compared to the cupola fly ash, further minimizing our waste output.
  • Recycling Efforts: We proudly use 100% recycled scrap at the foundry to manufacture our products. At our injection and blow molding production sites, up to 30% of the plastic used is made from recycled materials, showcasing our commitment to reducing waste and promoting recycling.

Reduced Carbon Footprint Achievements:

  • 2,800 Tons of Annual CO2 Emissions Eliminated:  The adoption of EI furnaces for iron operations has been a monumental step in our sustainability journey, eliminating 2,800 tons of CO2 emissions annually. This not only represents a significant reduction in our carbon footprint but also exemplifies our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable manufacturing practices

Employee and Governance Initiatives

Health & Safety

Safety Improvements: At Bingham & Taylor, our commitment to health and safety is paramount. We’ve dramatically improved our safety metrics, achieving a 77% reduction in the Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) and an 81% decrease in Days Away Restricted Time (DART) over the last five years. These figures are now four times lower than industry rate averages, underscoring our dedication to a safer workplace. Notable equipment upgrades include the installation of modern safety light curtains and area scanners on mold core machines, a robotic welder to reduce exposure to hazardous fumes and molten metal, and a data monitoring system on our forklifts to enhance operational safety.

Diversity and Opportunities in the Workforce

Diversity Efforts: As a certified woman-owned business enterprise, Bingham & Taylor champions diversity and inclusion. Our workforce mirrors the diverse communities where we operate, fostering a culture that values employees by promoting from within. This approach rewards individual efforts and encourages career growth, ensuring that our team remains vibrant, innovative, and dedicated to excellence.

Community Involvement

Supporting Local Communities: Bingham & Taylor is deeply committed to enriching the communities in which we operate. We actively support local students’ involvement in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities in Culpeper, provide financial assistance to local fire departments for essential equipment and training, and contribute to community events like local concerts and festivals. Our goal is to drive positive change, not only within our business but also in the wider community, making a tangible impact through active partnership and support.

Products and Production Innovations

Plastic Products Innovations:

At Bingham & Taylor, our commitment to sustainability extends to developing innovative plastic products. We utilize advanced materials and processes to ensure durability and longevity, reducing the need for replacements and minimizing environmental impact. Our products are designed for recyclability, incorporating up to 30% recycled plastic content in production. This approach not only conserves resources but also reduces waste, aligning with our sustainability objectives.

Foundry Iron Products Innovations:

In our foundry operations, we’ve embraced technology and innovation to enhance production efficiency and environmental performance. By transitioning to Electric Induction (EI) furnaces, we’ve significantly reduced emissions and energy consumption. Our iron products are produced using 100% recycled scrap metal, minimizing our raw material footprint. These technological advancements in our production processes underscore our commitment to producing sustainable and high-quality iron products.

Sustainability Goals

Looking ahead, Bingham & Taylor is committed to advancing our sustainability initiatives with clear and ambitious goals:

  • Further Emission Reductions: We aim to continuously improve our emissions profile, targeting further reductions in greenhouse gases and particulate matter across all operations. This includes investing in cleaner technologies and optimizing existing processes for greater environmental efficiency.
  • Expanding Automation to Reduce Health Risks: Prioritizing the health and safety of our workforce, we plan to expand the use of automation in our production processes. Automation will help minimize employees’ exposure to hazardous conditions, reducing health risks and enhancing workplace safety.
  • Fostering a Diverse Workforce: Recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion, we are dedicated to fostering a workplace that reflects the communities we serve. This includes initiatives to recruit and support a diverse workforce, providing equal opportunities for all employees to grow and succeed.

These goals reflect our ongoing commitment to sustainability, safety, and diversity—key pillars that guide Bingham & Taylor’s operations and future direction. Through innovation, responsible practices, and a dedicated team, we are poised to make a lasting impact on our industry and the planet.
